Learn alcohol marker blending

REALISTIC COLORING

for people who want to understand the why

Most coloring instruction focuses on supplies and copying steps.

I teach something different: How to think through color, shading, and detail for coloring that looks more natural and dimensional.

If you’re new to alcohol markers, trying to improve your colored pencil skills, or wondering why your coloring still looks flat, this page will get you started.

Ladybug exercise from The Blend

I’m new to alcohol markers…

Start with The Blend if you want to learn smooth marker blending, ink control, and how to begin the process of coloring for realism.

Learn the skills that make realistic marker coloring feel controlled instead of frustrating.

Begin as a beginner, end at intermediate level, ready for realistic, dimensional coloring.

The Blend is taught specifically with Copic markers.

I use Copic Sketch and Ciao markers because consistent ink quality matters when learning realistic marker technique. Demonstrations, assignments, and feedback throughout the course are all built around the Copic system.

If you prefer another marker brand, this may not be the right beginner course for you.

Fruit Tart exercise from The Point

I’m new to colored pencils…

Start with The Point for solvent-free pencil techniques, better pressure control, and pencil work that enhances your marker coloring instead of sitting awkwardly on top.

This is the foundation for using colored pencils with confidence.

Begin as a beginner, end at intermediate level, and expect glimpses of photorealism.

The Point is taught specifically with Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils.

I use Prismacolor because they provide artist-grade quality at an entry-level price. Demonstrations, assignments, and feedback throughout the course are all built around the Prismacolor system.

Marker underpainting is part of the process, so this course also incorporates a small handful of Copic markers.

If you prefer another colored pencil brand, this may not be the right beginner course for you.

Painted Daisy workshop from ColorWonk

I want more realistic coloring…

You’re ready for Color Wonk when the mechanics of coloring begin to feel comfortable.

Marker students should already know how to:

  • smooth blend

  • shade with underpaint

Pencil students should already know how to:

  • layer instead of solvent-blend

  • control pencil pressure

  • understand opaque vs translucent pencil behavior

These technical skills create the foundation for Color Wonk, where we focus on realism, artistic interpretation, color relationships, texture, light, shadow, and creating more dimensional coloring.

Strawberry Toast workshop from ColorWonk

I’m not sure what I need…

That’s normal.

Most colorists don’t have a supply problem. They have a “what am I supposed to be doing now?” problem.

  • If your markers streak, bleed, or refuse to blend, start with The Blend.

  • If you’re new to realistic pencil over marker, start with The Point.

  • If your technical skills are improving but your coloring still feels flat or uncertain, you may be ready for Color Wonk.

And if you’re still unsure, begin with the free articles in the LEARN section. They’ll help you understand how I teach before you choose a program.
